Irresponsibly linking schizophrenia and violence

In late May StigmaWatch received several complaints regarding comments made by Archibald Prize-winning painter, Tim Storrier, on ABC Television's Q&A.

Excerpt from program transcript:

TIM STORRIER: Well, he is a nut in that regard - a dangerous nut. It is just very sad for his parents. I mean obviously the guy was schizophrenic, I would imagine.

Viewers were upset that the acclaimed artist had irresponsibly linked the behaviour of a mass-murderer, whose mental health status remains unknown, to an often misunderstood and stigmatised mental illness.

StigmaWatch documented feedback received, contacted the program producers and asked for the feedback to be forwarded to Mr Storrier.
