Memorial service celebrating the life of Anne Deveson

  • Share

A public memorial service to honour Anne Deveson AO’s extraordinary contribution to Australia will be held next Monday 13 February in Sydney.

In the first sitting of Parliament for the year both Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten made statements today recognising the life and work of Anne Deveson AO.

Anne was a highly respected journalist, author, broadcaster, filmmaker and mental health advocate.

Anne was a fearless and passionate advocate who fought for less discrimination and better support in mental health, human rights, women's rights and LGBT rights.

It was 30 years ago that Anne teamed up with another mental health pioneer Dr Margaret Leggatt to hold a public event at NSW Teachers Federation Hall where a young man stood up in front of hundreds of people and said, “My name is Simon Champ and I have schizophrenia.” This was the beginning of national mental health organisation SANE.
